In the historic market town of Newark on Trent sits Gannets Daycafé and Bistrot! Established in 1979, Gannets Daycafé and Bistro, Castle Gate is a renowned stopping place with fabulous food and a warm welcome. Housed in an elegant Georgian building situated opposite the ruins and grounds of beautiful Newark Castle, Gannets is an idyllic location perfect for visitors looking to eat and drink in Newark.
Gannets is family owned, maintaining a legacy of signature dishes using locally sourced and organic ingredients, a seasonal menu and daily specials. Gannets provides delicious food for vegetarians and vegans as well as daily choices of dairy and gluten-free lunches, cakes and puddings. There is also a lovely children’s menu available.

Our delicious hot drinks, lemonade, lovely lunches, scrumptious snacks and perfect puds and cakes are all homemade using organic and locally sourced ingredients including fruit and veg from Maxey’s farm shop, Newark. Vegan, vegetarian, dairy and gluten-free options all available.
Breakfast menu
Traditional English, Eggs Benedict, vegan and vegetarian breakfasts available using locally sourced bacon and sausages from Sibeys’ and free range eggs from Peter Cobb, Darlton on Trent. Accompany it with a hot drink (oat and soya milk options available) or freshly squeezed orange juice. Served until 11:00am Monday-Saturday and until 12:00pm on Sunday.

Our children’s menu, which includes vegan and vegetarian options, uses organic and locally sourced ingredients but in smaller portions for babies, children and those with a smaller appetite! Our lunches, snacks, puddings and cakes are perfect for even the pickiest of eaters.

On the second floor of our Daycafe in Newark we have a lovely bistrot facility that all guests are welcome to use. It provides a more relaxed dining atmosphere than the hustle and bustle of a busy cafe, as well as being available for private parties, reservations or special occasions.

We offer a private hire service in our first floor beautiful bistro! We can cater for weddings, birthdays, baby showers, whatever your occasion we can take care of it! Available 7 days a week, lunchtime or evening. You can personalise and build your own unique menu, with the guidance of our team or choose from our signature dishes and enjoy this beautiful private space overlooking the wonderful castle grounds!
Fancy an afternoon tea party?
Our bistro offers pre-booked tea parties for 15 to 30 guests. Enjoy dainty sandwiches, home-baked scones with jam and whipped cream, and a selection of scrumptious cakes with real leaf tea, Monmouth coffee or add some bubbles for that extra sparkle. You can even build your own selection from our homemade savoury and sweet delights!

Have you considered organising a cocktail party or a dinner event to include an auction, raffle or quiz? Whatever your ideas we can accommodate you and your guests. We have the perfect venue for a lovely, intimate wedding reception in an elegant setting overlooking the stunning Newark Castle grounds. We can cater for small to medium weddings in our stunning bistro or in our main café with extended areas that include our bright and airy garden room and our secret garden!
